Bring a rare conservation icon into your specialized facility with the Chinese Alligator (Alligator sinensis). Native exclusively to the lower Yangtze River basin in China, this elusive species is one of only two living alligator species in the world. Significantly smaller and more heavily armored than the American alligator—featuring complete bony plating across its belly—the Chinese Alligator is prized for its calm temperament and historical significance. Captive-bred specimens play a crucial role in global conservation, allowing accredited institutions and expert keepers to support the preservation of this critically endangered living fossil.

Key Features & Care Requirements

• Unique Armoring: Fully ossified osteoderms (bony plates) covering both the dorsal and ventral sides, providing complete armored protection.

• Manageable Size: Reaches a much smaller adult length (typically 5 to 7 feet), requiring less sprawling square footage than larger crocodilian species.

• Burrowing Behavior: Exhibits a strong natural instinct to dig and burrow, requiring enclosures with deep, secure substrate layers or artificial den structures alongside aquatic zones.

• Temperate Adaptability: Native to a cooler climate, this species naturally undergoes brumation (winter dormancy) and requires seasonal temperature adjustments to thrive.

• Dietary Needs: A specialized carnivorous diet consisting of fish, crustaceans, small mammals, and appropriate vitamin supplements.

Important Note: Due to its critically endangered status in the wild, the Chinese Alligator is heavily protected under international conservation laws (CITES Appendix I) and local wildlife regulations. This listing is strictly intended for accredited zoos, research facilities, and licensed professional handlers with the necessary import/export and possession permits.
