Bring home one of the most docile and visually striking ground-dwelling geckos on Earth with the African Fat-Tailed Gecko (Hemitheconyx caudicinctus). Native to the arid savannas, rocky outcrops, and woodlands of West Africa, these charming lizards are instantly distinguished by their soft, velvety skin and striking alternating bands of rich chocolate brown, caramel tan, and sometimes a brilliant white dorsal stripe. True to their name, they store vital fat reserves in their thick, turnip-shaped tails. Combined with a naturally calm, slow-moving personality that rarely bites, the African Fat-Tailed Gecko makes an exceptionally rewarding, low-stress pet for beginners and experienced hobbyists alike.

Key Features & Care Requirements

  • Velvety Skin & Striking Bands: Soft, suede-like texture paired with high-contrast banding of rich browns, tans, and occasional pale dorsal stripes.

  • Gentle, Slow-Moving Temperament: Famously calm, docile, and slow-paced, making them wonderful, manageable pets that tolerate gentle handling very well.

  • Secure Terrestrial Setup: Requires a horizontal terrarium (minimum 20 to 40 gallons for an adult) equipped with multiple secure hiding spots on both the warm and cool sides, plus a moist hide to aid in shedding.

  • Gentle Heat & Humidity: Thrives at a warm ambient temperature ranging from 80°F to 88°F on the warm side (with a basking spot up to 90°F) and moderate humidity (50% to 60%) maintained by lightly misting a designated humid hide and substrate. (Note: As nocturnal animals, intense daytime UVB is optional but low-level output can be beneficial).

  • Insectivorous Diet: An insect-eating diet consisting of live, gut-loaded crickets, dubia roaches, and mealworms, dusted regularly with calcium and vitamin supplements.

Important Note: African Fat-Tailed Geckos are strictly nocturnal ground-dwellers that prefer low-light environments and spend their days resting safely inside humid hides. Their thick tails serve as health indicators; a plump, well-rounded tail shows the gecko is thriving and properly nourished.
